Where dogs walk
the short blocks between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway

Mayport Road and State Road A1A meet at the northern edge of town, and the westerly boundary reaches the Intracoastal Waterway. Most of the land between is residential, with walkable blocks that bring dogs and owners past one another all day. That makes it a good place to practice calm passing. Pick a time of day with moderate traffic, ask your dog to sit as another dog passes at a comfortable distance and reward the moment it looks back at you.

Most of the town's total area is water, so marsh, creek and shore are part of the landscape. Salt, sand and mud get into coats and paws, so rinse after outings. Teach a dependable leave-it for dead fish and other beach finds, since these can make a dog sick. Dog rules at the beach and in parks are posted by the owner of each site, so read the signs and check the city's own information.

Summer heat and humidity arrive early. Leave the longest training for the morning, bring water and keep a cool indoor routine for the afternoon. Private lessons, generally estimated at $75 to $150, can handle leash skills, and puppy packages around $150 to $350 start new dogs on the right foot. Prices are general estimates and each trainer sets their own.

Good questions

Before you begin.

How do I practice passing other dogs?

Keep a comfortable distance, ask for a sit and reward your dog for looking at you.

Why is leave-it important at the beach?

Dogs may grab dead fish or trash, which can make them ill. A solid leave-it helps.

Where can I find beach rules?

Read the posted signs and the city's official information.

Do I need to rinse my dog after a walk?

Rinsing salt and sand off paws and coat helps prevent irritation.
